Final Revisions to my Magazine

When reviewing my magazine after my third quarter submission I had some final touches to change before uploading my final submission. I needed to fix it so that there was no hyphenated words on my cover or table of contents as well as adding some branding on the bottom of my article pages.

Third Quarter Submission

Image
I changed the cover to a less busy photo. It was very hard to read the sub headings advertising other articles in my magazine. My peers suggested the same pose with the model little more to one side of the screen and place her in front of a plain wall, I utilized their suggestions. Next I  redid my table of contents to a beaker centralized on the page with the titles coming off the markings on the beaker. It was suggested by my peers to do the same glassware that was used on my cover photo to keep a theme throughout my magazine, I utilized their suggestions. Finally I rearranged my two page spread so that it is more appealing to the eye. I got rid of the picture outlines, straighten up the columns and change the font.

Creative Critical Reflection Draft - How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware and online – in this project?

Image
I integrated a few different technologies while working on this project. I used: blogger, publisher, Google and a variety of social media pages. Using blogger, I was able to log what I had worked on every step of the project. From which project I wanted to choose to what social group I was targeting to examples of the final product. I used Google to do research on what type of magazine I want to do, the design of my magazine, the publication of my magazine, and the distribution of my magazine. Utilizing google to search examples of other magazines truly opened my eyes up to the world of print and just how much work goes into it. I now have a better understanding of the business and what to do with my magazine. I also used many social media platforms to view their design and techniques for advertising. I viewed Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and saw the way that they did article sneak peaks and their sales on subscriptions.   Lastly, I used publisher to crea...

Creative Critical Reflection Draft- How did your production skills develop throughout this project?

Image
When starting my magazine, I had not ever used publisher. After playing around with the program a little bit I figured out what to do. I utilized YouTube to understand the program and basic functions that I would need to edit my magazine. First, I added my pictures in my magazine, however when I blew up the cover picture it had became blurry. I played with the editing features, quality and resolution to fix the cover image. Then knowing how to create a full background picture without creating a blurry mess, I added my table of contents photo and article photos. Then I added my article into publisher. On my two-page spread, each page has a text box and each with two columns. Once I submitted my magazine as my midterm I noticed on the large screen that the space between the columns were not even on both pages, page one had a smaller space between comparted to page two. I tried to use one textbox for the two pages however that did work. Then I tried to then create ...

Creative Critical Reflection Draft -How does your product engage with audiences and how would it be distributed as a real media text?

Image
My magazine would engage with readers anywhere from 16 years old to 80 years old. Because my magazine is an academic journal it will most likely appeal to those who are interested in the academic field and its new achievements. Younger classrooms would use my magazine in class to work research the newest innovations of the scientific field.  While on a break between classes college students will be reading my magazine to bring new insight to the research they are conducting. Professors who run their own lab will be reading Future Scientist to help recruit students to continue their research in their lab. However, while it is targeted more towards science professionals or students pursuing the medical field, all ages can enjoy seeing the advancements of the rising generation. I believe that grandparents who have worked in the science field will read this magazine and be proud of the next generation and the hard work and advancements they are making. When thinking of how I would li...

Creative Critical Reflection Draft- How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

Image
My magazine does not necessarily represent social issues however, it can represent many social groups. I originally aimed this magazine towards future scientist only. But after working with it and researching other scientific magazines I would like to target college professors, college students, high school students, and anyone else interested in research. That way not only the younger generation of scientist such as middle and high school students would get to read about the exciting advancements that these young adults are preforming but college level students can take interest in the new science breakthroughs. I also believe that the professors in the research field would be interested in what the future generations are interested in and working on. So, while it is targeted more towards science professionals or students pursuing the medical field, all ages can enjoy seeing the advancements of the rising generation. I would want my grandparents to read this magazine and be ...

Digital Distribution Research - National Geographic

Image
National Geographic prints their magazine monthly. It is $19 for a yearly print magazine, $12 for a digital yearly subscription or $19 for both a digital and print. Using this pricing, there is an incentive to sign up for the digital and print subscription.Once starting to look around their website this pops up: by filling out this survey National Geographic is then able to increase their rating and prices for their advertisements. When looking up the difference between the print and online subscription this is what National Geographic published " Magazine subscribers (Print, Digital, Print Plus) who have an account on nationalgeographic.com can access premium online content – including unlimited articles, the full magazine archive, exclusive ebooks, and streaming films."

Digital Distribution Research- Popular Science

Image
The Popular Science magazine was just recently cut from bi monthly publications to quarterly publications. This is one way that the magazine is changing their distributions to move with the new technology and the change in demand. You can now check online for new daily articles, with email reminders/promotions.  It is $10 a year for their paper subscription through their website or you can also purchase a single magazine on Google Newsstand for $4.99. On their website there are advertisements for their social media and subscription frequently placed. They advertise on Twitter Facebook, and through email.

Traditional Digital Distribution of Magazine

Image
A magazines most common way of digitally advertised and out in the market is by using a magazine distributor. Distribution companies use door- to- door selling,  negotiating with retailers and local businesses to stock the magazine, postage costs, labeling costs, delivery costs to retailers or businesses and other related expenses. You can also save some money and distribute your publication digitally. This helps you reduce mailing and labeling costs. Although this form of distribution is far simpler with just pressing a button to send your latest edition to your list of subscribers, the competition among digital editions is fierce. A magazine distributor in my area is CircSense, they are located in Miami, Florida, only 3 and a half hours from me. CircSense covers the entire range of functions to build and manage the publication’s marketing and circulation. Their services include direct mail management, planning and execution, insert cards strategy and design, and budget...

Superbowl Advertisements

Image
One of the most expensive time of year for advertisements is during the NFL Super Bowl. Selling 30 seconds for 5 million dollars it is important that the viewers understand the advertisements. I broke down my favorite three advertisements to help gather ideas to promote my magazine. National Football League(NFL)- Famous NFL players, Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr, gathered the attention of viewers from young teens to seniors. Odell Beckham Jr. is a wide receiver for the New York Giants who has an appeal to the younger generation through his twitter and reality TV show. Eli Manning appeals more toward adults and seniors who have followed him with the Giants  for the past 13 years. Using faces that appeal to the audience the NFL already has our attention. They then proceed to keep it by playing the famous song from Dirty Dancing and Eli and Odell preform the dance. This light heart-ed dance is not only to promote the NFL but to hopefully boost their reputation. More recently the...

Article Revisions

Image
Finally I have rearranged my two page spread so that it is more appealing to the eye. I got rid of the picture outlines, straightened up the columns and changed the font.

Table of Contents Revisions

Image
I would like to redid my table of contents to a beaker on the left side of the page with the titles coming off the markings on the beaker. It was kept the same glassware that was used on my cover photo to keep a theme throughout my magazine. I like how there is less white space, however I am still working with the font so that it is easier to read.

Cover Photo Revision

Image
My cover photo was updated to a plain picture background. The sub headings advertising other articles in my magazine are now visible and in a larger font. I kept the same pose with the model little more to one side of the screen and place her in front of a plain wall. I am happy with the revisions.

Revisions

After presenting my magazine to the class, seeing it on the large screen there are meany revisions I would like to make and many that my peers suggested. I would first like to change the cover to a less busy photo. It was very hard to read the sub headings advertising other articles in my magazine. My peers suggested the same pose with the model little more to one side of the screen and place her in front of a plain wall. Not only the younger generation of scientist such as middle and high school students but college level students can take interest in the new science breakthroughs. I also believe that the professors in the research field would be interested in what the future generations are interested in and working on.
